TPChange – The Tropopause Region in a Changing Atmosphere
by the German Research Foundation (DFG, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) and partially by MPIC.
Within TPChange we aim to improve the understanding of relevant multiscale processes in the tropopause region and to specify their impact on composition, dynamics and ultimately on future climate and climate variability. The PhD candidate or Postdoc will work in project A04
Sources and processes controlling aerosol composition in the UTLS – From tropical monsoon to extratropical regions – Sub-project 2
We are looking for a PhD student or a Postdoc for one of the sub-projects of A04 in which we want to investigate small-scale mixing and gradients of aerosol particles across the tropopause. We plan airborne fast size distribution and composition measurements using a Learjet aircraft. Additionally, we want to characterise vertical transport of aerosol particles by convection and/or warm conveyor belts as well as secondary aerosol formation in the UTLS. During the Learjet aircraft campaign we will operate a compact aerosol mass spectrometer inside the aircraft cabin and two aerosol size distribution instruments, one in the cabin and one in a tow shuttle that will fly a few hundred meters below the Learjet.
The tasks of the Ph.D. or Postdoc candidate include especially the integration of the aerosol mass spectrometer and the size distribution instruments (UHSAS) into the Learjet and the tow shuttle, as well as instrument operation during the field campaign and data evaluation. Comparative representative aerosol data from the tropopause region are available through the IAGOS-CARIBIC project from FZ Jülich. Data evaluation will be conducted in close cooperation with “TP Change” partners, especially the modelling groups. The aircraft campaign is coordinated by JGU and MPIC Mainz and will be a close collaboration between all partners involved.
Our second sub-project in project A04 concentrates on mass spectrometric particle analysis in the monsoon area and conducts laboratory experiments for a better understanding of organic aerosol compounds. The two PHD candidates or Postdocs in our project are expected to work together and to support each other in the experimental work.
Master degree or Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, meteorology, or comparable degree. We are looking for candidates with a background in aerosol measurements and in handling of complex measurement systems, and with enthusiasm for atmospheric aerosol research. We expect participation in measurement campaigns. Good English language skills are required, and basic programming skills (e.g., LabView, Igor, Python) are desirable.
The position is offered for a maximum of 4 years (until 30.06.2025) and the place of employment will be Mainz. The targeted starting date is 1 July 2021.
