JOHANNES SCHNEIDER investigates how aerosol particles are transported from the upper troposphere into the stratosphere. Using aircraft measurements, satellite data, and atmospheric modeling, his research shows that sulfur from a mid-sized volcanic eruption can cross the tropopause and form sulfate aerosols in the stratosphere.
