PhD position or Postdoc (m/f/d)
funded within the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre 301
TPChange – The Tropopause Region in a Changing Atmosphere
by the German Research Foundation (DFG, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) and partially by MPIC.
Within TPChange we aim to improve the understanding of relevant multiscale processes in the tropopause region and to specify their impact on composition, dynamics and ultimately on future climate and climate variability. The PhD candidate or Postdoc will work in project A04
Sources and processes controlling aerosol composition in the UTLS – From tropical monsoon to extratropical regions – Sub-project 1
Your mission will focus on a) field measurements using aerosol mass spectrometry onboard the American research aircraft “HIAPER” and b) laboratory work in our facility at the MPIC in Mainz. The airborne field experiment “ACCLIP” will take place in South Korea in summer 2022, aiming at sampling the outflow region of the Asian monsoon. Your tasks include the preparation of the field experiment, the instrument operation on-site in South Korea, the analysis and interpretation of the data set presented in a scientific publication. You will closely collaborate with international partners from NASA and NOAA as well as with TPChange partners in projects A06 and C06. You will further conduct laboratory work (in close collaboration with project A05), focusing on the development and characterization of our aerosol mass spectrometer “ERICA” in response to organic aerosol compounds.
Our second sub-project in A04 will focus on small-scale gradients and dynamical processes at the extratropical tropopause using particle size distribution and composition measurements. The two PhD candidates or Postdocs in our project are expected to work together and to support each other in the experimental work.
We can offer you to be part of an interdisciplinary and young research group embedded in the research consortium TPChange with different expertise in fields of atmospheric research. You can establish your network with national and international partners. You will gain experiences with experimental methods measuring aerosol properties in the field and laboratory.
You hold a Master/Diploma degree or a Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, meteorology, or a comparable degree. You have a background in aerosol mass spectrometry and in handling complex measurement systems and diverse data sets. Experiences with basic programming (e.g., Igor, Python, LabView) are desirable. We expect enthusiasm for atmospheric aerosol research, participation in measurement campaigns, and good interpersonal skills. Good knowledge of English (spoken and written) is required.
The position is offered for a maximum of 4 years (until 30.06.2025) and the place of employment will be Mainz. The targeted starting date is 1 July 2021.
