Yafang Cheng elected AAAS Fellow 2023
Aerosol researcher recognized for distinguished scientific achievements
Aerosol researcher Yafang Cheng from the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (MPIC) in Mainz has been elected as a 2023 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for her exceptional work in Atmospheric and Hydrospheric Sciences. The AAAS recognizes Prof. Cheng for her transformative contributions and fundamental advances in understanding atmospheric aerosols and their impact on air quality, public health and climate.
Yafang Cheng leads the Minerva Independent Research Group at the MPIC. Together with her team, she focusses on a fundamental understanding of the physical and chemical process of aerosol nanoparticles and microdroplets. Their research also extends to the formation and transformation of atmospheric aerosols and their impact on air quality and climate change.
The American Association for the Advancement of Science honors members whose efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications in service to society have distinguished them among their peers and colleagues with the AAAS Fellowship.
Understanding the formation and transformation of aerosols
The theme of Yafang Cheng´s research at MPIC is to understand key processes that drive the formation and transformation of aerosols particles, and to elucidate and quantify the effects of atmospheric aerosols on air quality, public health and climate.
“The overall goal of our research is a fundamental and predictive understanding of the origins, interactions, and impacts of aerosols in the Earth system, to resolve aerosol effects on regional air quality and climate, and to increase the reliability of global change projections”, says Yafang Cheng. For this purpose, she and her team combine the development of cutting-edge instruments, lab experiments, field observation and a synthesis approach with model simulations and machine learning techniques that involve multi-scale physical and chemical processes from bulk phase to nanoscale and from regional to global scales.

About the AAAS:
AAAS Fellows are a distinguished cadre of scientists, engineers and innovators who have been recognized for their achievements across disciplines, from research, teaching, and technology, to administration in academia, industry and government, to excellence in communicating and interpreting science to the public.
In a tradition stretching back to 1874, these individuals are elected annually by the AAAS Council. Newly elected Fellows are recognized for their extraordinary achievements at the ceremonial Fellows Forum, a time-honored event at the AAAS Annual Meeting where they are presented with a certificate and blue and gold rosette.
