Questioning some of the ‘standard narratives’ involving biological and cultural adaptations often interpreted as prerequisites for the geographical expansion of the human niche into higher latitudes.
The ‘standard narratives’ underlying almost all models for understanding the geographical expansion of the human niche into higher latitudes involve both questions around biological and cultural adaptations. Biological adaptation to cold-climatic conditions, the use of fire, dwelling, and clothing, the latter three aspects resembling human key cultural traits, serve regularly as (logical) arguments in the geographical northward expansion of our species. These aspects are most often seen as imperative in the thermoregulation of the human body.
