Bird Island Campaign

This field campaign, conducted at Bird Island (54°00'S, 38°03'W) between Oct. 2010 and Jan. 2011, was a collaboration between

Scientific Objectives:

The major goal of this project is to measure the chemical composition of submicron non-refractory aerosol and specifically

  • to study the pertubations of background aerosol by gaseous (nitrogen) emissions from seabird colonies,
  • to determine the relative importance of sulfate/sulfuric acid and methanesulfonic acid (MSA) to the local aerosol system,
  • and to observe particle formation events.

This new data will be available for modeling the hemispheric impact of these point source emissions on the very low background levels of particles in the southern hemisphere.
